What the air filter calculator does and when to use it
A clogged furnace or air handler filter restricts airflow, makes the system work harder and lets more dust circulate through the home. This calculator gives a suggested replacement interval, in days, for your filter along with a calendar date for the next change counted from today. It starts with a baseline for the filter type and then shortens the interval if you have pets or allergies in the household.
Use it to set a reminder when you install a new filter, to compare how often different types need changing, or to plan a yearly filter budget. The result is a rule-of-thumb schedule. The manufacturer's stated life for your particular filter, the pressure drop across it and a visual check should always override it, especially during heavy heating or cooling seasons, after construction work or wildfire smoke.
The method and its variables
- Base interval (B) depends on the filter type: basic 30 days, pleated 90 days, HEPA 180 days, electrostatic 365 days.
- Pets (p) is the number of pets. If p is greater than 0, the interval is multiplied by 0.7.
- Allergies (a) multiplies the interval by 1.0 for none, 0.8 for mild and 0.6 for severe.
- Interval = B × (0.7 if pets) × (allergy factor), rounded to a whole number of days.
- Next change is today's date plus the unrounded interval, shown in your local date format.
Any number of pets above zero applies the same 0.7 factor, so one cat and three dogs give the same interval in this tool.
Worked example
A household uses a pleated filter and has 2 pets and mild allergies. The base interval is 90 days. Pets multiply it by 0.7 to give 63 days. Mild allergies multiply that by 0.8 to give 50.4 days, which rounds to 50. The calculator reads Replace every 50 days, followed by a next-change date about 50 days from today.
For comparison, a basic filter with pets and severe allergies gives 30 × 0.7 × 0.6 = 12.6, shown as 13 days. A HEPA filter with no pets and no allergies stays at 180 days. The spread shows how much household conditions shift the schedule even when the filter type stays the same.
Common mistakes and how to interpret the result
- Ignoring the filter's own rating. A thick media filter may be rated for 6 to 12 months while a thin fiberglass one is not. Check the packaging and adjust the base value mentally.
- Choosing a filter your system cannot handle. Very dense filters, including some HEPA types, can restrict airflow in systems not designed for them. Check your equipment manual before switching.
- Waiting for the date instead of inspecting. If the filter looks gray and clogged sooner, change it sooner, and note the reason for next time.
- Treating the schedule as a medical measure. The allergy setting only shortens the interval. It does not indicate how well a filter will relieve symptoms.
