About the Tip from Net Price Calculator

This calculator computes a tip based on the net price — the pre-tax subtotal on a receipt — rather than the post-tax total. It also shows the sales tax amount separately and, if you're splitting the bill, the amount each person owes.

The formula

The math is straightforward:

  • Tip amount = Net price × (Tip percentage ÷ 100)
  • Sales tax = Net price × (Tax rate ÷ 100)
  • Total bill = Net price + Sales tax + Tip amount
  • Amount per person = Total bill ÷ Number of people

Why tip on the net price instead of the total?

Sales tax is money collected for the government, not payment for the server's work — it has nothing to do with the quality of service. Most etiquette authorities (and many servers themselves) consider the pre-tax subtotal the correct base for calculating a tip. Because tax rates vary by state and city, tipping on the total after tax means your tip percentage effectively drifts higher in high-tax areas for the exact same service — tipping on the net price keeps the tip consistent regardless of local tax rate.

Using the result

Enter the subtotal shown on your receipt (before tax), your local sales tax rate, and the tip percentage you intend to leave. If you're splitting the check, enter the number of people to see an even per-person share of the net price, tax, and tip combined. Some receipts already list tax and a pre-tax subtotal separately — use those exact figures when available for the most accurate result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should you tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Most etiquette guides recommend tipping on the pre-tax subtotal (the net price), not the tax-inflated total. Sales tax is government revenue, not payment for service, so it should not factor into the tip calculation. This calculator applies your tip percentage to the net price by default.
How is the tip amount calculated from net price?
Tip amount = Net price x (Tip percentage / 100). Sales tax is calculated separately as Net price x (Tax rate / 100), and the total bill is Net price + Tax + Tip. If splitting among a group, the total is divided evenly by the number of people.
What is a standard tip percentage?
In the United States, 15-20% is the customary range for full-service dining, with 18-20% common for good service. Some diners tip more for exceptional service or less for counter service; local custom and service quality both play a role.
