How the Price per Round Calculator works
This calculator finds the true, all-in cost per round when you buy ammunition, or any item sold in fixed-count boxes, by combining the box price, sales tax, and shipping, then dividing by the total number of rounds in the order.
The formula
Five inputs feed the calculation, and every result follows directly from them:
- Total rounds = boxes × rounds per box
- Subtotal = boxes × price per box
- Tax = subtotal × tax rate
- Total order cost = subtotal + tax + shipping
- Price per round = total order cost ÷ total rounds
- Price per 1000 rounds = price per round × 1000
Why include tax and shipping
The price stamped on a box or listed online is rarely what you actually pay per round. Sales tax adds a percentage on top of the subtotal, and a flat shipping charge gets spread across every round in the order, so a low box price with high shipping can end up costing more per round than a pricier box with free shipping. Comparing the all-in price per round, or price per 1000 for larger orders, is the only way to put competing offers on equal footing.
Comparing box sizes and bulk deals
Retailers list ammunition in boxes of 20, 50, or 100 rounds, and bulk cases of 250 to 1,000 or more, so a raw box price tells you little by itself. Converting every offer to price per round, or price per 1000 for larger comparisons, puts a 20-round box and a 1,000-round case on the same scale so you can see which is actually cheaper.
