About the Pizza Tip Calculator

This calculator figures out how much to tip on a pizza order, adds sales tax, and splits the total bill evenly among a group. Enter the order subtotal shown on the receipt, your local sales tax rate, the tip percentage you want to leave, and the number of people sharing the cost.

The formula

The calculator uses the standard tip formula, applying both the tax rate and the tip percentage to the pre-tax order subtotal, then adding everything together:

  • Tip amount = Subtotal × (Tip % ÷ 100)
  • Tax amount = Subtotal × (Tax rate % ÷ 100)
  • Total bill = Subtotal + Tax amount + Tip amount
  • Amount per person = Total bill ÷ Number of people

Following common U.S. tipping convention, the tip is calculated on the pre-tax subtotal rather than the post-tax total, since sales tax is a government charge and not money the restaurant or driver earned. If you would rather tip on the after-tax amount, just enter a tip percentage that already reflects the larger base you have in mind.

Typical tip percentages

  • 10-15%: Carryout or pickup orders, where there is no table service or delivery involved.
  • 15-20%: Standard sit-down dining or pizza delivery.
  • 20% or more: Exceptional service, bad-weather deliveries, or large and complicated orders.

Worked example

A $32.00 pizza order with 8% sales tax and an 18% tip: tax = $32.00 × 0.08 = $2.56, tip = $32.00 × 0.18 = $5.76, and the total bill = $32.00 + $2.56 + $5.76 = $40.32. Split between 2 people, each person owes $20.16.

Practical context

The calculator handles the arithmetic, but it assumes an even split — it does not know who ordered an extra topping or a side of wings. If the group did not order equally, settle those differences separately before or after splitting the calculated total.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Common U.S. tipping etiquette bases the tip on the pre-tax subtotal, since sales tax is a government charge rather than money the restaurant or driver earned. This calculator applies your tip percent to the subtotal, then adds tax and tip separately to reach the total. If you would rather tip on the after-tax total, simply enter a tip percent that already reflects the larger base you want.
What is a fair tip for pizza delivery or carryout?
15% to 20% of the subtotal is standard for delivery, with many people tipping toward the higher end for bad weather, long distances, or large orders. Carryout or pickup orders typically get a smaller tip, often 10% to 15%, since there is no delivery or table service involved. Very small orders often warrant at least a $3 to $5 minimum tip regardless of percentage.
How is the per-person split calculated?
The calculator adds the subtotal, tax amount, and tip amount to get the total bill, then divides that total evenly by the number of people entered. This assumes everyone shares the cost equally; it does not account for people who ordered more expensive items or extra toppings, which would need to be settled separately.
