About sheep gestation
Gestation is the length of time a ewe carries her lambs from conception to birth. In sheep (Ovis aries), gestation averages about 147 days — close to five months — with a normal range of roughly 142 to 152 days. Because the average is so consistent across the species, a simple date-addition gives a reliable estimate of when a bred ewe will lamb.
The formula
The calculation is straightforward date arithmetic:
Estimated lambing date = breeding date + 147 days
To bracket the normal window, the tool also adds 142 days for the earliest expected date and 152 days for the latest. If you know your flock or breed tends to lamb early or late, enter a custom gestation length in the second field; the default is the species average of 147 days.
Why the estimate matters
- Lambing preparation. Knowing the window lets you set up a clean, draft-free lambing area, gather supplies (iodine, towels, lamb warmer, colostrum), and be on hand for difficult births.
- Nutrition timing. The last 4–6 weeks of gestation is when roughly 70% of fetal growth occurs, so ewes need increasing energy and protein then. Counting back from the due date tells you when to step up feeding.
- Vaccination and shearing. A pre-lambing clostridial (CDT) booster is typically given 2–4 weeks before lambing so ewes pass antibodies to lambs through colostrum. Crutching or pre-lamb shearing is also scheduled off the due date.

- Shorter-gestation breeds: Finnsheep and some prolific breeds average roughly 143–145 days.
- Litter size effect: ewes carrying twins or triplets, and young ewe lambs, often lamb a day or two earlier than singles-bearing mature ewes.
