About the Cow Gestation Calculator

Gestation in cattle (Bos taurus) lasts an average of about 283 days — roughly 9 months and 9 days. This calculator adds the gestation length to the date the cow was bred (the date of successful natural service or artificial insemination) to estimate her calving, or "due," date. It also reports how many days remain, how far along she is, and which trimester the pregnancy is in.

The formula

The math is a simple date addition:

Calving date = breeding date + gestation length

Using the herd average, that is breeding date + 283 days. The days-remaining figure is the difference between the due date and today; days-into-gestation is the difference between today and the breeding date.

Why gestation length varies by breed

The 283-day average masks real differences between breeds. Dairy breeds tend to be shorter and Bos indicus (zebu) breeds noticeably longer:

  • Holstein and other dairy breeds: ~279 days
  • Jersey: ~279–280 days
  • Angus: ~283–285 days
  • Hereford: ~285–287 days
  • Charolais: ~287–289 days (longer-gestation Continental breed)
  • Brahman and Brahman-cross (Bos indicus): ~292 days

Choose a breed preset (or type an exact number) to match the sire and dam. Bull calves also tend to be carried one to two days longer than heifer calves, and older cows in higher parity often carry slightly longer than first-calf heifers.

Why the calving date matters

Knowing the expected calving date lets producers group the calving season, schedule pre-calving vaccinations and mineral supplementation, move close-up cows to a clean calving pasture or barn, and be present to assist with difficult births (dystocia). Missing the window can mean unattended births in bad weather and higher calf mortality.

Reference points

  • A cow bred on March 1 using the 283-day average is due about December 9 of the same year.
  • A Holstein bred on the same date (279 days) is due about December 5.
  • The estrous cycle repeats about every 21 days, so if a cow "returns to heat" ~18–24 days after breeding, she likely did not conceive and the clock resets to the next service.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is a cow pregnant?
On average about 283 days, or roughly 9 months and 9 days. Normal individual pregnancies range from about 279 to 287 days. Dairy breeds such as Holstein average closer to 279 days, while Brahman and other Bos indicus cattle can average around 292 days.
Do I count from breeding or from a positive pregnancy check?
Always count from the breeding date — the day of natural service or artificial insemination, which is when conception occurred. A pregnancy diagnosis by palpation or ultrasound only confirms the pregnancy weeks later; it does not reset the gestation clock. If you know only the AI date, use that.
How accurate is the due date?
The estimate is only as precise as the breeding date and the assumed gestation length. Even with an exact breeding date, actual calving commonly falls within a few days either side of the prediction, and up to a week is not unusual. Watch for physical signs of imminent calving — udder filling, relaxation of the pelvic ligaments, and mucus discharge — as the due date nears.
