About the dog adult weight calculator

This tool estimates how big a puppy will be when fully grown, using the two things you can measure at home right now: its current weight and its current age. It then sorts the estimate into a rough size category so you can plan for the dog you will actually have — crate size, food budget, and how much space a full-grown dog needs.

The formula

The calculator uses growth-rate extrapolation, the most common at-home method for predicting adult weight:

Estimated adult weight (lb) = (current weight in lb ÷ current age in weeks) × 52

The logic is simple: divide the puppy's weight by its age to get a weekly growth rate, then project that rate out to one year (52 weeks), the point by which most dogs have reached or nearly reached their adult frame. For example, an 8 lb puppy at 12 weeks has grown about 0.667 lb per week, which projects to roughly 35 lb as an adult. Kilograms are converted with the exact factor 1 lb = 0.453592 kg.

Why age matters so much

Puppies do not grow at a constant rate, so when you weigh them changes the answer. Growth is fastest in the first few months and then slows as the dog approaches maturity. The extrapolation is most reliable when the puppy is weighed between about 8 and 20 weeks: early enough that fast growth is still under way, but late enough that the very earliest newborn spurt has settled. Weigh too young and the rate is unstable; weigh too old and you have missed most of the growing, so the projection just returns a number close to the current weight.

Size categories by adult weight

  • Toy / small: under 12 lb (Chihuahua, Yorkshire Terrier, Pomeranian).
  • Small: 12–25 lb (Beagle, French Bulldog, Miniature Schnauzer).
  • Medium: 25–50 lb (Border Collie, Cocker Spaniel, Australian Shepherd).
  • Large: 50–90 lb (Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd, Boxer).
  • Giant: 90 lb and up (Great Dane, Mastiff, Saint Bernard).

When an accurate weight really counts

  • Medication dosing: many veterinary drugs are dosed by body weight (mg/kg), so dosing decisions must use a real current weight, never a projection.
  • Food and feeding: daily calories scale roughly with metabolic body weight (kg raised to the 0.75 power), so a large breed needs proportionally fewer calories per kilogram than a small one.
  • Gear planning: crate, harness, and bed sizing are much cheaper to get right once, using a realistic adult-weight estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is this estimate?
For most dogs weighed between 8 and 20 weeks, the projection lands within roughly 10–15% of true adult weight. Small and toy breeds finish growing by 8–12 months, so their early estimates hold up well. Large and giant breeds keep filling out until 18–24 months, so their true adult weight is often a bit higher than an early extrapolation suggests.
Does this work for mixed-breed dogs?
Yes, and it is often the only method available for a mixed-breed puppy of unknown parentage, since breed weight charts do not apply. Just expect wider uncertainty: littermates from the same parents can end up noticeably different sizes, so treat the number as a planning range rather than an exact target.
What if my puppy is very young or already an adult?
Under 8 weeks the growth rate is still unstable, so the projection is only a rough guide. Once a dog is close to maturity the extrapolation simply returns a value near its current weight, which is expected — at that point the current weight is the better answer.
