How to estimate a horse's weight

Very few horse owners have access to a livestock scale, yet an accurate body weight matters for deworming, feeding, and medication. The standard workaround is a simple geometric estimate built from two body measurements: the heart girth (the circumference of the chest just behind the front legs and withers) and the body length (the straight-line distance from the point of the shoulder to the point of the buttock). This is the same math printed on a commercial "weight tape," reproduced here so you can use an ordinary soft tailor's tape.

The formula

With both measurements in inches, the estimated weight in pounds is:

Weight (lb) = Heart girth² × Body length ÷ 330

The girth is squared because a horse's chest is roughly cylindrical, so cross-sectional area grows with the square of its circumference; multiplying by length approximates the animal's volume, and dividing by the constant 330 converts that volume into pounds for an average-density adult horse. Different classes of horse have slightly different builds, so the divisor changes: use 330 for an adult horse, 299 for a pony, 301 for a yearling, and 280 for a weanling or foal.

Measuring correctly

  • Heart girth: pass the tape all the way around the barrel, snug against the skin just behind the elbows and over the highest point of the withers. Take the reading at the end of a normal exhale, with the horse standing square on level ground.
  • Body length: measure the straight horizontal distance from the point of the shoulder (the bony bump at the front of the chest) to the point of the buttock (the rearmost point of the hindquarter) — not the curved distance along the body, which overestimates weight.

A tape-and-formula estimate of an adult light-breed horse in average body condition is usually within about 5–10% of true scale weight, which is accurate enough for routine care.

A pot-bellied or heavily pregnant horse has a larger girth without proportionally more useful body mass, which inflates the estimate, while a very fit, lean horse may read slightly low.
