How to size a windsurfing sail
The single most important rig decision in windsurfing is sail size, measured in square metres (m²). Too big and you get overpowered, catapulted, and exhausted; too small and you never get planing and end up bobbing in a wallow. This calculator uses the standard rule of thumb the windsurfing community has relied on for decades to give you a sensible starting size for the conditions.
The formula
Sail area (m²) = rider weight (kg) × 0.484 ÷ wind speed (knots).
The logic is intuitive: a heavier sailor needs more sail area to generate enough power to plane, so weight sits on top of the fraction; and the harder the wind blows, the less sail you need for the same power, so wind sits on the bottom. The 0.484 constant is an empirical fit that lands most recreational sailors in the right size for early planing on flat water. Divide, and you get the sail area that will just get you going in that wind.
Why it matters
Windsurfing power scales with sail area and with the square of the wind speed, so conditions change fast. A sail that is perfect at 12 knots can be a fistful of trouble at 20 knots. Getting the size roughly right on the first rig-up saves you from de-rigging on the beach, and it keeps you in the safe, controllable band where the sport is fun rather than frightening.

- A 75 kg sailor in 15 knots: 75 × 0.484 ÷ 15 ≈ 2.4 m² of raw drive — in practice rigged as roughly a 5.0 m² sail once you allow for board size and early planing, which is why most sailors treat the formula output as a floor and round up toward the sail they own.
- Light wind (8–12 knots) usually calls for the biggest sails in the quiver — 7.0 to 9.0 m² for an average adult on a large, wide freeride board.
- Moderate wind (13–18 knots) is the classic 5.0–6.5 m² planing range for most riders.
- Strong wind (20+ knots) is small-sail territory: 3.5–4.7 m², paired with a smaller, faster board for control.
