How to size a kiteboarding kite

Choosing a kite is a balancing act between two numbers: how much wind is blowing and how much you weigh. Wind supplies the power, and your body is the load that power has to move. When the wind is light you need a bigger canopy to catch enough of it to get riding; when it is howling you need a smaller one so you are not dragged off the water. This calculator turns those two variables into a single square-meter recommendation.

The formula

The rule of thumb used here is:

Kite area (m²) = 2.4 × rider weight (kg) ÷ wind speed (knots)

Kite area is proportional to your weight and inversely proportional to wind speed. Double the wind and you halve the kite you need; add a heavier rider and the required area grows in proportion. The coefficient 2.4 reflects a typical freeride twin-tip setup ridden by an intermediate rider. If your weight is in pounds, divide by 2.205 first to convert to kilograms (75 kg ≈ 165 lb).

Why kite size matters

An undersized kite in light wind simply will not generate enough pull to get you up and planing — you sink, schlog, and get frustrated. An oversized kite in strong wind is the dangerous case: it can lift you unexpectedly, drag you downwind, and make a controlled landing hard. Sizing correctly keeps you in the sweet spot where the kite has enough power to ride but you can still steer, edge, and depower it comfortably.

Kites are sold in fixed sizes (commonly 5, 7, 9, 11, 12, 14 m²), so round to the nearest available size. Most riders own two or three kites — for example a 9 m² and a 12 m² — to cover the full wind range at their local spot.

What kite size do I need for 20 knots?
At 20 knots, a 60 kg rider needs about 7 m², a 75 kg rider about 9 m², and a 90 kg rider about 11 m². Twenty knots is a comfortable, well-powered freeride wind for most riders, which is why 9–12 m² kites are the most common sizes sold.
Does board size change the kite I need?
Yes. A bigger board (more surface area, like a light-wind or foil board) planes at lower speeds, so you can ride a smaller kite than this estimate in marginal wind. A small board needs more pull to get going, pushing you toward the larger end. This calculator assumes a standard twin-tip.
