How the sauna calorie estimate works
Sitting in a sauna is a very low-intensity activity, so the honest way to estimate its calorie cost is the standard MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) equation used for every activity. One MET is your resting metabolic rate — the energy you burn doing nothing. A relaxed sauna sit is assigned roughly 1.5 MET, meaning your body is working about 50% harder than complete rest, mostly because the heat raises your heart rate and the effort of thermoregulation (sweating, dilating blood vessels) adds a small metabolic load.
The formula
The MET equation converts intensity, body mass, and time into calories:
- Calories per minute = MET × 3.5 × body mass (kg) ÷ 200
- Total calories = calories per minute × minutes in the sauna
The constant 3.5 is the oxygen consumption of 1 MET in millilitres per kilogram per minute (3.5 mL O₂/kg/min), and dividing by 200 converts oxygen use to kilocalories (since burning one litre of oxygen releases about 5 kcal). If your weight is in pounds, convert to kilograms first by multiplying by 0.45359237.
Worked example
A 70 kg person sitting in a sauna at 1.5 MET burns 1.5 × 3.5 × 70 ÷ 200 = 1.84 calories per minute. Over a 20-minute session that is about 37 calories. Double the time to 40 minutes and you reach roughly 74 calories; the relationship is linear in both weight and time.
