How elliptical calorie burn is calculated

This calculator estimates the energy you expend on an elliptical trainer using the MET method, the same approach exercise physiologists use across activities. MET stands for metabolic equivalent of task: 1 MET is your resting metabolic rate, defined as an oxygen uptake of 3.5 milliliters per kilogram of body weight per minute. An activity rated at 5 METs burns energy about five times faster than sitting still.

The working formula is:

Calories per minute = MET × 3.5 × body weight (kg) ÷ 200

Total calories are simply that rate multiplied by your workout duration in minutes. The 3.5 is the resting oxygen constant, and dividing by 200 converts millilitres of oxygen into kilocalories (roughly 5 kcal are released per litre of oxygen consumed, and 1000 mL ÷ 5 = 200). If you enter your weight in pounds, the calculator first converts it to kilograms using 1 lb = 0.453592 kg.

What MET value fits elliptical training

The 2011 Compendium of Physical Activities assigns elliptical trainer / cross-trainer use a value of about 5.0 METs for moderate general effort. Lighter, easy-spinning warm-ups sit nearer 4.5 METs, while pushing the resistance and incline into a vigorous zone lands around 7.0 METs, and hard interval work can reach 8.0 METs or higher. Because effort, not the machine, drives the burn, this calculator lets you pick the intensity band that matches how hard you actually worked.

Why body weight matters so much

The formula scales linearly with body weight, so a 90 kg person burns about 29% more than a 70 kg person doing the identical workout. That is why a machine that ignores your weight, or assumes a default, can be badly off. Duration scales the result linearly too: doubling your time doubles the calories, all else equal.

The elliptical's advantage is lower joint impact, letting many people sustain a higher effort for longer.
Should I subtract my resting calories?
The MET formula counts gross calories, which includes the small amount you would have burned at rest during that time (about 1 MET). For most people the difference is minor, but if you want net exercise calories, subtract roughly your body's resting burn for the same duration (about 1.2 kcal/min for a 70 kg adult).
