About the DIN Ski Binding Setting Calculator

The DIN setting is the release value that tells an alpine ski binding how much twisting or forward-lean force it should tolerate before it lets go of your boot. "DIN" comes from the Deutsches Institut für Normung, the German standards body that first published the scale; the release-value determination is now codified internationally in ISO 11088. A binding set too high may not release during a fall and can cause knee or lower-leg injuries; a binding set too low can pre-release unexpectedly at speed. Getting the number right is a genuine safety matter, which is why the final adjustment must always be made and release-tested by a certified technician.

How the DIN value is determined

The standard method does not use a single algebraic formula. Instead it uses a lookup chart driven by five inputs:

  • Weight and height together place you in a "skier code" (a letter from A to O). You take the lower of the two codes — the shorter/lighter reading — because that produces the more conservative, safer release value.
  • Skier type (I, II, or III) shifts the code. Type I (cautious, prefers slower speeds and easier terrain) uses the base code; Type II (average) moves up one step; Type III (fast, aggressive, steep terrain) moves up two steps, which raises the release value.
  • Age adjusts for the fact that children under 11 and adults 50 and over have more fragile bones and ligaments; both groups shift one code lower so the binding releases more readily.
  • Boot sole length (BSL), printed in millimeters on the side of most ski boots, sets the leverage the binding acts through. A longer boot needs a lower DIN number to release the same twisting torque at the leg, so the final skier code is cross-referenced against a BSL column to read off the DIN value.
