How ski length is sized
Downhill (alpine) skis are sized by their length in centimeters. The long-standing rule of thumb is the "chin-to-forehead" test: stand a ski vertically on its tail, and the tip should reach somewhere between your chin and the top of your head. In numbers, that puts your recommended length at roughly 85% to 95% of your height. This calculator applies that rule and then adjusts for your ability level, the terrain you ski, and your weight.
The core formula it uses is:
Ski length (cm) ≈ height (cm) × factor + weight adjustment
where the base factor is about 0.86 for beginners (chin height), 0.90 for intermediates (nose to chin), and 0.94 for advanced skiers (forehead to top of head). Groomed carving skis trim the factor slightly (about −0.01), all-mountain skis leave it unchanged, and powder or off-piste skis add about +0.02 because extra length increases float in soft snow. The weight adjustment nudges the result up for skiers heavier than average for their height and down for lighter skiers, capped at about ±3 cm.
Why the right length matters
Length changes how a ski behaves. Shorter skis are lighter, quicker to turn, more forgiving, and easier to control at low speed — ideal for beginners, lighter skiers, and tight groomed runs. Longer skis track straighter, stay stable at speed, and float better in powder, but they demand more strength and technique to turn. Choosing near the middle of your range gives the best all-round balance; going shorter favors playfulness and control, going longer favors speed and stability.
Typical reference points
Using the all-mountain, intermediate setting (factor ≈ 0.90), common heights map to roughly these lengths:
- 160 cm (5'3") skier → about 144 cm ski (range ~139–149 cm)
- 170 cm (5'7") skier → about 153 cm ski (range ~148–158 cm)
- 180 cm (5'11") skier → about 162 cm ski (range ~157–167 cm)
- 190 cm (6'3") skier → about 171 cm ski (range ~166–176 cm)
Beginners typically take 5–10 cm off these figures; advanced skiers and powder specialists add a similar amount. Skis are usually sold in fixed increments (roughly every 5–7 cm), so pick the closest available size to your target.
