Time Until Calculator

Count down to any future date and time. Enter a target date, plus an optional starting point, and see exactly how much time remains in days, hours, minutes, and seconds.

Quick Facts

Formula
Time until = target date/time − start date/time
The difference is converted to days, hours, minutes, and seconds (1 day = 86,400 seconds).
Default start
Right now, in your device's local time zone
Fill in the optional fields to count from a different starting date and time instead.

About the Time Until Calculator

This tool answers a simple question with an exact answer: how much time is left until a specific date and time? Enter a target date and time and the calculator subtracts the current moment (or a custom starting point you choose) from it, then converts the difference into a countdown of days, hours, minutes, and seconds.

The formula

The underlying math is simple subtraction of two points in time, then unit conversion:

  • Difference = Target date/time − Start date/time. By default, the start is the current moment on your device.
  • The difference (in milliseconds) is broken into whole days (86,400,000 ms each), whole hours (3,600,000 ms), whole minutes (60,000 ms), and remaining seconds — the standard way clocks and countdown timers report elapsed or remaining time.
  • The same difference is also expressed as a single decimal number of total days and total hours, useful when you want one number to compare instead of a multi-unit breakdown.

Time zones and daylight saving

The calculator reads the date and time fields as your device's local time and compares them against your device's local clock, so no time zone conversion is needed for a single-location event. If the countdown crosses a daylight-saving-time change, the browser's clock already accounts for the one-hour shift, so the day/hour/minute/second breakdown stays accurate — only the total-hours figure will show slightly more or fewer than 24 hours for that particular day.

Common uses

  • Countdowns to holidays, birthdays, weddings, and anniversaries
  • Project deadlines, product launches, and event start times
  • Ticket sales, registration windows, and other fixed cutoffs
  • Checking how much time has elapsed since a past date or event

Precision note

Results are only as accurate as your device's clock and time zone setting. If the deadline is legally or contractually binding, confirm the exact time zone and moment specified in the governing document — this calculator assumes both the target and the start are expressed in the same local time zone as your device.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the time until a date calculated?
The calculator subtracts the current date and time from the target date and time you enter, giving a difference in milliseconds. That difference is then converted into whole days, hours, minutes, and seconds (1 day = 86,400 seconds) for the countdown, and expressed as decimal totals for the total-days and total-hours figures.
What time zone does the countdown use?
By default the calculator uses your device's local clock and time zone for both the target date and the current moment. If you want to count from a specific date and time instead of right now, fill in the optional start date and start time fields, which are interpreted in that same local time zone.
What happens if the target date has already passed?
The calculator still works — it reports how much time has elapsed since that date and time instead of how much remains, and labels the result as already passed rather than upcoming.
