Quick Facts

Formula
Unit price = Total price / Total weight
Convert both products to the same weight unit before comparing.
Standard conversions
1 lb = 453.59 g; 1 kg = 2.2046 lb; 1 oz = 28.35 g
These let you compare prices across differently labeled packages.

About the Price per Weight Calculator

This calculator finds the unit price of a product — the cost per pound, per kilogram, per ounce, or per 100 grams — so you can compare packages of different sizes, brands, or stores on equal footing. Enter the price and weight for one product to see its unit price, or add a second product to compare the two directly.

The formula

Unit price uses one simple relationship:

  • Unit price = Total price ÷ Total weight

Because packages are labeled in different units — grams, kilograms, ounces, or pounds — this calculator first converts every weight to grams using standard conversions (1 lb = 453.59237 g, 1 oz = 28.349523 g, 1 kg = 1,000 g), then reports the price per pound, per kilogram, and per 100 grams so any two products can be compared regardless of how their labels are written.

Getting accurate results

  • Use the exact price on the shelf tag or receipt, and the exact net weight printed on the package — not the container size or drained weight for canned goods.
  • Double-check the weight unit. Confusing ounces (a mass unit) with fluid ounces (a volume unit) is one of the most common sources of unit-price errors.
  • If you want tax, shipping, or a coupon reflected in the comparison, adjust the price you enter before calculating; the tool does not add these automatically.

Using the result

A lower price per pound, per kilogram, or per 100 g means a better deal on a pure cost-per-weight basis. But unit price does not account for quality, freshness, brand, or how much of the product you will actually use before it spoils — a cheaper bulk size is only a good deal if you can use it before it goes to waste.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is unit price (price per weight)?
Unit price is the cost of a product per standard unit of weight, found by dividing the total price by the total weight. Expressing cost per pound, per kilogram, or per 100 grams lets you compare packages of different sizes on equal footing.
How do I compare two different package sizes?
Enter the price and weight for each product, choosing the weight unit that matches its label. This calculator converts both to price per pound, per kilogram, and per 100 grams automatically, so the lower number per unit weight is the better value regardless of package size.
Why does price per 100 grams matter?
Price per 100 grams is a standardized reference unit used on many grocery shelf tags and price labels, especially outside the United States. Because it uses a small, fixed base amount, it makes prices easy to compare even across very different package sizes.
Does this include tax, shipping, or bulk discounts?
No. The calculator only converts the price and weight you enter into a per-unit rate. If you want tax, shipping fees, or coupon discounts reflected in the comparison, add or subtract them from the price before entering it.
