About the Sobriety Calculator
This calculator turns a sobriety start date into a clear record of time sober. It subtracts your start date from today using calendar arithmetic to report years, months, and days sober plus a total day count, shows how far away your next commonly used recovery milestone is, and estimates how much money you've kept by not spending on drinks or units per day.
How the calculation works
- Time sober: today's date minus your sobriety start date, broken into whole years, whole months, and the remaining days using standard calendar-based subtraction (the same method a date or age calculator uses).
- Total days sober: the same date difference expressed as a single running day count.
- Next milestone: the next entry in a standard milestone list (24 hours, 1 week, 30/60/90 days, 6/9 months, 1 year, 18 months, then each additional year) that is still ahead of your current day count.
- Money saved: total days sober multiplied by the units per day and the cost per unit you enter, a simple estimate of what you would have spent had you kept using at that rate.
Getting an accurate result
Use the actual calendar date you consider your sobriety to have started, not an approximate month. For the savings estimate, enter your honest average - a rough number is still useful, but a rounder guess simply produces a rounder estimate. The tool always compares your start date to today's date; it does not accept a future start date.
When to consult a professional
This tool only performs date and cost arithmetic - it is not a treatment plan and does not assess relapse risk. For support with substance use, withdrawal, or recovery planning, talk to a healthcare provider or a recognized recovery program.
