About the ANC Calculator without Bands
The absolute neutrophil count (ANC) is the number of neutrophils circulating in the blood and a key marker of how well the body can fight bacterial infection. This tool uses the "without bands" version of the formula: it counts only mature segmented neutrophils and leaves immature band forms out of the total.
The formula
ANC is derived from a complete blood count with differential. The count multiplies the white blood cell count by the fraction of neutrophils:
- ANC without bands = WBC × (% segmented neutrophils) / 100
- ANC with bands (traditional) = WBC × (% segs + % bands) / 100
Because WBC is usually reported as ×10³/µL (thousands of cells per microliter), multiply the reading by 1,000 to express ANC in cells/µL. Example: a WBC of 7.0 ×10³/µL with 55% segs gives ANC = 7,000 × 0.55 = 3,850 cells/µL.
Why exclude bands?
Bands are immature neutrophils. Manual differentials are imprecise at telling bands apart from segmented cells, so many laboratories and clinical protocols report ANC from segmented neutrophils only. Excluding bands yields a slightly lower and more reproducible ANC. This calculator shows both versions so you can compare them side by side.
Interpreting the result
An ANC at or above 1,500 cells/µL is generally considered normal. Neutropenia is graded as mild (1,000–1,499), moderate (500–999), or severe (below 500) cells/µL, and a lower ANC means a higher risk of infection. Values above roughly 7,000 cells/µL are termed neutrophilia.
