About the ANC Calculator
The absolute neutrophil count (ANC) is the number of neutrophils, the white blood cells that lead the body's defense against bacterial and fungal infection, in a microliter of blood. A complete blood count (CBC) reports the total white blood cell (WBC) count, but the differential breaks that total into percentages. This calculator combines the two into a single absolute number using the standard clinical formula.
The formula
ANC is the WBC count multiplied by the fraction of white cells that are neutrophils. Neutrophils appear in the differential as two lines: mature segmented neutrophils (segs, also called polys or PMNs) and immature bands. Both count, so:
- ANC = WBC x (% segs + % bands) / 100
- Example: WBC 6,000 cells/uL, 55% segs, 3% bands gives 6,000 x 0.58 = 3,480 cells/uL.
- If the WBC is reported as x10^3/uL (K/uL) or x10^9/L, multiply by 1,000 to express the ANC in cells/uL, or read the SI result directly in x10^9/L.
Interpreting the result
An ANC of 1,500 cells/uL or above is generally considered normal. Below that, the widely used neutropenia grades are: mild (1,000-1,500), moderate (500-1,000), and severe (below 500 cells/uL). A lower ANC means fewer neutrophils available to fight infection, so the risk of serious infection rises as the count falls. A markedly elevated count (neutrophilia) can accompany infection, inflammation, or stress.
When to consult a professional
This tool performs the arithmetic of the standard ANC formula from values already on your CBC with differential; it does not diagnose, and it gives no medication or dosing advice. Reference ranges vary slightly between laboratories, and the meaning of a low or high count depends on your medical history and any treatment you are receiving.
