About the Reduce Your Plastic Calculator

This calculator estimates how much single-use plastic you keep out of the waste stream by swapping everyday disposables for reusable alternatives. Tell it how many plastic water bottles, shopping bags, straws, and coffee cups/lids you avoid in a typical week, and it converts that count into three things people actually care about: total items avoided, the weight of plastic saved, and the greenhouse gas emissions (CO2e) avoided by not manufacturing that plastic in the first place.

The formula

The math is simple multiplication and unit conversion, applied per item type and then summed:

Plastic weight saved (grams/week) = Σ (items avoided per week × average weight per item in grams)

That weekly weight is then scaled to a monthly figure (× 4.345, the average weeks per month) and an annual figure (× 52 weeks), converted from grams to pounds (1 lb = 453.592 g), and converted to estimated CO2e using an average plastic production emissions factor of about 3 kg CO2e per kg of plastic (a mid-range planning estimate — actual life-cycle emissions vary by resin type and manufacturing process, roughly 1.8–3.5 kg CO2e per kg for common PET and HDPE plastics).

  • Plastic water bottle (16.9 oz / 500 mL, PET): ~9.5 grams of plastic per bottle (cap included). Commonly cited industry figures range 9–13 g depending on bottle design.
  • Plastic shopping/grocery bag (HDPE): ~5.5 grams per bag. Thin retail bags typically run 4–6 g.
  • Plastic drinking straw: ~0.42 grams per straw — small individually, but straws are used and discarded in huge volumes.
  • Disposable coffee cup lid + plastic lining: ~3.5 grams of plastic per cup (the paper cup body itself is excluded; this is the plastic component only).
