About the Plastic Waste Fate Calculator
This calculator shows where plastic waste actually ends up once it leaves the point of use. Every tonne of discarded plastic follows one of four broad paths: it gets recycled into new material, incinerated (often with energy recovery), landfilled in an engineered site, or "mismanaged" — meaning it is littered, openly burned, or dumped in an uncontrolled site with no containment. The split between these four fates is what most people mean when they talk about the global "plastic problem," because it is the mismanaged share that eventually leaks into rivers, coastlines, and oceans.
The formula
For a given quantity of plastic waste W, the calculator applies fixed global average shares:
- Recycled = W × 9%
- Incinerated = W × 19%
- Landfilled = W × 50%
- Mismanaged (leaked into the environment) = W × 22%
These four shares are simple percentages of the total and sum to 100%. They come from the OECD's Global Plastics Outlook (2022), which is the most widely cited source for global end-of-life plastic statistics, built on national waste-management data compiled for the year 2019.
Why these numbers matter
Global plastic waste generation has roughly tripled since 1990 and now exceeds 350 million tonnes per year. Only a small fraction is recycled: even in countries with strong collection systems, contamination, mixed polymer types, and limited markets for recycled resin keep the effective global recycling rate in the single digits. The 22% "mismanaged" share is disproportionately concentrated in countries that lack formal waste-collection infrastructure — this is also why a relatively small number of major rivers account for a large share of the plastic that reaches the ocean each year.
Putting the numbers in context
- Global plastic production was about 400+ million tonnes in 2022 (Plastics Europe / OECD estimates); roughly half of all plastic ever made was produced since 2000.
- An estimated 8–11 million tonnes of plastic enter the ocean every year, a figure widely attributed to the 2015 study by Jambeck et al. and updated by subsequent OECD and UNEP assessments.
- Single-use packaging is the largest category of plastic waste by volume, and the category with the lowest recycling rate, because it is often multi-layered, contaminated with food residue, or too lightweight to be economically sorted.
- Policy levers aimed at shifting these shares include extended producer responsibility (EPR) schemes, deposit-return systems, landfill/incineration taxes, and bans on specific single-use items — each is designed to raise the recycled share and shrink the mismanaged share.
