About the Turtle Tank Size Calculator
Aquatic turtles such as red-eared sliders, painted turtles, map turtles, and musk turtles spend most of their lives in the water, so the volume of that water directly determines how clean it stays and how much room the animal has to swim, dive, and thermoregulate. This calculator applies the standard keeper's rule of thumb — 10 gallons of water per inch of shell length — to give you a realistic minimum tank size, then adjusts for multiple turtles and tells you the minimum water depth.
The formula
For a single turtle, the recommended minimum water volume is:
Gallons = shell length (inches) × 10
Shell length here means the straight-line carapace length — measured from the front edge of the top shell to the back edge with a ruler held flat, not following the curve. For each additional turtle sharing the tank, add about 50% of the largest turtle's requirement, because turtles overlap basking and swimming space rather than each needing a full, separate tank. Water depth should be at least 1.5 times the shell length so the turtle can fully right itself if it flips over, and depth up to 2–3× the shell length is even better for strong swimmers.
Why turtles need so much water
- Water quality. Turtles are messy, high-waste animals. More water dilutes ammonia and nitrate between filter cycles, so a larger tank is genuinely easier to keep clean, not just more comfortable.
- Swimming room. Aquatic turtles are active divers; a cramped tank leads to stress, shell abnormalities, and poor muscle development.
- Thermal gradient. A bigger footprint lets you set up a proper warm basking zone and a cooler swimming zone in the same tank.
Common reference points
- A hatchling 1–2 inch turtle: about 10–20 gallons to start, but it will quickly outgrow it.
- A 4-inch juvenile: about 40 gallons.
- A 6-inch adult (typical female red-eared slider reaches 10–12 inches): about 60 gallons, rising toward 100–120 gallons at full size.
- Two 5-inch turtles: about 50 + 25 = 75 gallons.
