How the Livestock Fence Cost Calculator works

Fencing a pasture comes down to three material groups — posts, wire, and the labor to install them — sized from the total length of fence you are building. This calculator takes the fence length (in linear feet), your post spacing, the number of horizontal wire strands, and unit prices, then returns the number of posts, the total wire footage, the full cost, and the cost per linear foot. The math is simple arithmetic, so you can re-run it as prices or dimensions change.

The formulas

  • Line posts = ceil(fence length ÷ post spacing) + 1. Each span between two posts equals the spacing, and a run needs one extra post to close the final span. Example: 1,320 ft ÷ 12 ft = 110 spans, so 111 line posts.
  • Total wire = fence length × number of strands. A 1,320 ft fence with 5 strands needs 6,600 ft of wire. Add about 10% for tensioning, splices, and end-post wraps.
  • Total cost = (posts × cost per post) + (wire footage × wire cost per foot) + (fence length × labor/extras per foot).
  • Cost per linear foot = total cost ÷ fence length — the number to compare quotes and fence types against.

Turning acreage into fence length

Fence is priced by perimeter, not area. A square field of A acres has a perimeter of 4 × √(A × 43,560) feet, since 1 acre = 43,560 ft². A square 1-acre paddock is only about 835 ft around; a square 40-acre field is about 5,280 ft (one mile). Because perimeter grows with the square root of area, cost per acre falls fast as fields get bigger — one reason cross-fencing small paddocks is proportionally expensive. If your field is a rectangle, use the actual perimeter, 2 × (length + width), instead of the square approximation.

Typical reference values

  • Post spacing: 8–12 ft for woven wire and barbed wire, up to 16–25 ft for high-tensile electric fence with stays between line posts.
  • Strand count: 4–5 strands of barbed wire for cattle; 5–7 strands of high-tensile for cattle or horses; woven "field fence" replaces strands with a single roll of mesh.
  • Installed cost: roughly $2–$5 per linear foot for high-tensile or woven wire, and more for board, vinyl, or heavy game fence. Corners, gates, and brace assemblies add cost beyond the per-foot run.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many fence posts do I need?
Divide the fence length by your post spacing and add one for the closing post: posts = length ÷ spacing + 1. For 1,320 ft of fence with posts every 12 ft, that is 111 line posts. This counts line posts only — add extra posts for each corner, gate opening, and brace/H-assembly, which typically use two or three heavier posts each.
How much wire does a multi-strand fence need?
Multiply fence length by the number of strands. A 1,320 ft fence with 5 strands needs 6,600 ft of wire. Order about 10% extra to cover tensioning take-up, splices, and wrapping wire around end and corner posts. Woven-mesh fence is sold by the roll (commonly 330 ft) rather than by strand, so divide length by roll length instead.
Why is the cost per acre lower for big fields?
Fence cost scales with perimeter, but land is measured by area. Since a square field's perimeter is 4 × √(area), doubling a field's area multiplies its perimeter by only about 1.41. A 1-acre square costs roughly $1,700–$4,200 to fence at $2–$5/ft, while a 40-acre square (about 5,280 ft of perimeter) costs on the order of $10,000–$26,000 — far less than 40 times the one-acre figure.
Does this include gates, corners, and bracing?
No. The estimate covers line posts, wire, and per-foot labor for straight runs. Corner and end assemblies (braced H- or floating-diagonal posts), gates and their hinge/latch posts, and terrain features like creek crossings are separate line items. On a typical pasture they can add 10–25% to the total, so treat this figure as the base and add those items explicitly.
