How dog life expectancy is estimated from weight
Among dogs, adult body weight is the single strongest predictor of how long a dog is likely to live — and the relationship runs the "wrong" way compared to what you see between species. Across mammals in general, bigger animals live longer (an elephant outlives a mouse). Within the dog species it flips: the heaviest breeds die youngest. A 2 kg Chihuahua commonly reaches 15–16 years, while a 60 kg Great Dane often lives only 7–8. This calculator turns that pattern into a number.
The formula
The estimate uses a logarithmic fit to published median lifespans by breed size:
Life expectancy (years) = 16.7 − 2.17 × ln(adult weight in kg)
If you enter weight in pounds, it is first converted with the exact factor 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg. The natural log (ln) makes the curve steep for small dogs and flatter for giants, matching the real data far better than a straight line would. Because it is a median for a size class, the calculator floors the result at 6 years even for the very largest dogs.
What the formula predicts at common sizes
- Toy / small (2–9 kg, 4–20 lb): roughly 12.5–15 years — e.g. Chihuahua, Pomeranian, Dachshund.
- Medium (10–25 kg, 22–55 lb): roughly 10–12 years — e.g. Beagle, Border Collie, Cocker Spaniel.
- Large (25–45 kg, 55–99 lb): roughly 8.5–10 years — e.g. Labrador, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever.
- Giant (> 45 kg, > 99 lb): roughly 7–8.5 years — e.g. Great Dane, Mastiff, Saint Bernard.
Why bigger dogs live shorter lives
The leading explanation is that large breeds have been selected for very fast juvenile growth. Rapid cell division and high levels of growth factors (such as IGF-1) appear to accelerate biological aging and raise the lifetime risk of cancer, which is a major cause of death in big breeds. Giant dogs also carry a higher burden of orthopedic disease, bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus), and heart conditions like dilated cardiomyopathy. Small dogs simply age more slowly and hit those thresholds later.
Life expectancy vs. "dog years"
Life expectancy (how long a dog lives in total) is a different question from a dog's current age in human-equivalent terms. When you enter a current age of 1 year or more, the calculator also shows a human-age equivalent using the epigenetic-clock formula from Wang et al. (2020): human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31. That model puts a 1-year-old dog at about 31 human years and an 8-year-old dog at about 64 — front-loading maturity in the first year, which the old "multiply by 7" rule gets badly wrong.
