Converting dog years to human years
This calculator estimates how old your dog is in equivalent human years. It uses the size-based life-stage method endorsed by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the American Kennel Club (AKC), which reflects how dogs actually age: fast in their first two years, then more gradually, with larger breeds aging quicker than smaller ones.
The formula
Dogs do not age at a constant rate, so no single multiplier works. The method used here breaks a dog's life into stages:
- Year 1 counts as about 15 human years. A one-year-old dog is already physically mature and, in human terms, comparable to a mid-teenager.
- Year 2 adds about 9 more human years, so a two-year-old dog is roughly 24 in human terms.
- Each year after age two adds roughly 4 to 6 human years, depending on breed size: about 4 for small breeds, 5 for medium breeds, and 6 for large or giant breeds.
In compact form, for a dog aged D years (D greater than 2): human age = 24 + (D - 2) x P, where P is 4 (small), 5 (medium), or 6 (large/giant). For example, a 7-year-old large breed is 24 + (7 - 2) x 6 = 54 human years.
Why the "multiply by seven" rule is wrong
The popular "one dog year equals seven human years" rule has no scientific basis and is thought to have started simply as a marketing-friendly way to encourage annual vet visits. It fails at both ends of life: it would make a one-year-old dog equivalent to a 7-year-old child, yet a one-year-old dog can already reproduce. At the other end, it understates how quickly large senior dogs age. The staged, size-adjusted method above tracks the real biology far more closely.
Why breed size matters
Among dogs, larger breeds have shorter lifespans and age faster in their later years — the opposite of the general pattern across mammal species. A small breed such as a Chihuahua often lives 15 to 18 years, while a giant breed such as a Great Dane frequently lives only 7 to 10 years. That is why this calculator adds fewer human years per year for small dogs and more for giant ones.
A DNA-based alternative
A 2020 study from the University of California San Diego, based on DNA methylation (chemical "aging" marks on the genome), proposed the formula human age = 16 x ln(dog age) + 31, where ln is the natural logarithm. It was derived mainly from Labrador Retrievers. It gives similar mid-life results to the method above (a 5-year-old dog comes out near 57) but is less intuitive and does not adjust for breed size, so this calculator uses the AVMA/AKC staged method as its primary approach.

- 2 years: about 24 human years for all sizes.

- 7 years, large breed: about 54 human years; many large breeds are considered "senior" around this age.
