How the triathlon finish time calculator works

A triathlon is a continuous race, so your official finish time is the sum of all five parts of the day: the swim, the first transition (T1), the bike, the second transition (T2), and the run. The clock never stops between disciplines — the minutes you spend changing shoes and racking your bike count exactly the same as the minutes you spend racing. This calculator adds the five parts together using your own paces:

  • Swim time = (swim distance in metres ÷ 100) × your pace per 100 m. A 1,500 m swim at 2:00 per 100 m takes 15 × 2:00 = 30:00.
  • Bike time = (bike distance ÷ average speed) × 60. A 40 km bike at 30 km/h takes 1.333 h = 1:20:00.
  • Run time = run distance × your pace per kilometre. A 10 km run at 5:30 per km takes 55:00.
  • Transitions T1 and T2 are added directly in minutes.

Total finish time = swim + T1 + bike + T2 + run.

Standard triathlon distances

Race distances are standardised worldwide. The calculator uses the official figures below, so you only need to enter your paces:

  • Sprint: 750 m swim, 20 km bike, 5 km run.
  • Olympic (standard): 1,500 m swim, 40 km bike, 10 km run.
  • Half / Ironman 70.3: 1,900 m swim, 90 km bike, 21.0975 km run (a half marathon). The "70.3" is the total distance in miles.
  • Full Ironman: 3,800 m swim, 180 km bike, 42.195 km run (a full marathon). The total is 140.6 miles.

Why pace units differ by discipline

Swimmers almost universally track pace as time per 100 m because pool lengths and open-water buoys are measured that way. Cyclists think in average speed (km/h or mph) because that is what a bike computer displays. Runners think in pace per kilometre (or per mile). This calculator keeps each discipline in its native unit so you can enter numbers straight from your watch or training log without converting anything by hand.

Typical benchmark finish times

For a mid-pack age-group athlete, an Olympic-distance race often lands around 2:30–3:00. A strong age-grouper may finish an Olympic race near 2:15, while the front of the pro field goes under 1:50. A first Ironman 70.3 commonly falls between 5:30 and 7:00; a full Ironman for a finisher is typically 11:00–15:00, with the 17-hour cutoff being the hard limit at most branded races.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do transition times really count toward my finish time?
Yes. In triathlon the timing chip runs continuously from the swim start to the finish line, so T1 (swim-to-bike) and T2 (bike-to-run) are included in your official time. A slow, disorganised transition can easily cost 3–5 minutes, which is why experienced athletes practise them. Set T1 and T2 to 0 only if you want to see your pure "moving" time across the three disciplines.
How do I convert my swim pace if I only know it per 100 yards?
100 yards equals 91.44 metres, so a per-100-yard pace covers slightly less distance than a per-100-metre pace. To convert a per-100-yard time to per-100-metre, multiply it by about 1.0936 (that is 100 ÷ 91.44). For example, 1:50 per 100 yd is roughly 2:00 per 100 m. Enter the per-100-metre value here since the standard triathlon swim distances are metric.
Why is my real race often slower than the estimate?
This calculator assumes you hold each entered pace steadily for the whole leg. Real races add fatigue that compounds across disciplines — legs run off the bike ("brick" legs) are usually slower than fresh-legged running, open-water swimming without lane lines and drafting is slower than pool swimming, and hills, wind, and heat all cost time. Use paces that reflect race-day effort, not your best-ever single-sport splits, for a realistic estimate.
