About stride length
Stride length is the distance you cover in one full gait cycle — from the moment one foot strikes the ground until that same foot strikes again. It spans two steps: a right heel strike, a left heel strike, and back to the next right heel strike. This is the value that step-counting apps, treadmills, and GPS watches use to translate your step count into distance, so getting it right makes those distance estimates far more accurate.
The formula
The measured method needs nothing more than a known distance and an honest step count:
- Step length = distance ÷ number of steps
- Stride length = 2 × step length (a stride is two steps)
For example, walking a marked 100 ft in 42 steps gives a step length of 100 ÷ 42 = 2.38 ft, and a stride length of 4.76 ft (1.45 m). The more distance you measure over, the smaller the effect of miscounting a single step, so a longer course produces a more reliable average.
Estimating stride from height
When you cannot measure directly, height gives a reasonable estimate. A widely used rule of thumb is that walking step length is about 0.415 × height for men and 0.413 × height for women, which makes walking stride length roughly 0.83 × height. Running stride is longer — commonly estimated at about 1.14 × height — because the flight phase carries you farther per cycle. So a 5'10" (1.78 m) man has a walking stride of roughly 1.48 m and a running stride nearer 2.0 m. These are population averages; individual gait, leg length, and speed shift them significantly.
Typical reference points
- Average adult walking stride: roughly 4.5–5.0 ft (1.4–1.5 m).
- Average adult running stride: roughly 6–7 ft (1.8–2.1 m), rising with pace.
- Steps per mile: about 2,000–2,500 walking and 1,400–1,700 running for most adults — the origin of the common “2,000 steps per mile” approximation used by pedometers.
Why stride length matters
Runners track it because at a given cadence (steps per minute), a longer stride means more speed — but overstriding, where the foot lands well ahead of the body's centre of mass, wastes energy and raises injury risk. Coaches usually prefer raising cadence over lengthening stride. For everyday step-counting, an accurate stride length is what keeps a fitness tracker's distance and calorie estimates honest.
