About race time improvement
A race time improvement compares two finish times you ran over the same distance — an earlier "before" time and a later "after" time — and reports how much faster you got. The three numbers that matter are the total time you saved, the percentage of your old time you cut, and the change in your pace (time per mile or per kilometer). Together they turn "I feel faster" into a concrete, comparable figure.
The formulas
- Time saved = old finish time − new finish time (in seconds)
- Percent improvement = (old − new) ÷ old × 100
- Pace = finish time ÷ distance (seconds per mile or per km)
- Pace improvement = old pace − new pace (seconds saved per mile or km)
Because pace normalizes for distance, it is the fairest way to compare a 5K improvement against a half-marathon improvement. A minute saved on a 5K is a much bigger per-mile gain than a minute saved on a marathon.
A worked example
Suppose you ran a 5K (5 km, or about 3.107 miles) in 25:00 and later in 23:00. You saved 2:00, which is 120 s ÷ 1500 s = 8.0% faster. Your old pace was 1500 s ÷ 3.107 mi ≈ 482.8 s/mi (8:03/mi); your new pace was 1380 s ÷ 3.107 mi ≈ 444.2 s/mi (7:24/mi) — a pace improvement of about 39 seconds per mile.
Common reference points
For recreational runners, a first-year training block often yields 5–15% improvement at a given distance; experienced runners near their ceiling may fight for 1–2% a season. Standard race distances for comparison are 5K (3.107 mi), 10K (6.214 mi), the half marathon (13.109 mi), and the marathon (26.219 mi). Cutting your 5K from 30:00 to 27:00 is a 10% improvement; shaving a marathon from 4:00:00 to 3:50:00 is a 4.2% improvement.
Why it matters
Tracking improvement over the same distance is the cleanest signal that training is working, because the course length is held constant. It also feeds goal-setting: if you improved 6% this season, projecting a similar (usually smaller) gain gives a realistic target for the next race rather than an arbitrary one.
