What is the Magic Mile?

The Magic Mile is a fitness test created by running coach Jeff Galloway. You run a single measured mile at a hard but sustainable effort — roughly a pace you could hold for a mile time trial, not an all-out sprint — and use that time to predict what you can currently race at 5K, 10K, half marathon, and marathon distances. Galloway developed the multipliers below after tracking the performances of hundreds of thousands of runners over decades, so the "magic" is really just an empirical rule of thumb that holds up remarkably well for recreational runners.

The test is popular because it is cheap and repeatable. Instead of racing a full 5K or marathon to know your current fitness, you run one mile every two to three weeks, watch the predicted times drop as you train, and set realistic goal paces without over-racing.

The Magic Mile formula

Your one-mile time trial (the "magic mile," or MM) is converted to a predicted per-mile race pace for each distance:

  • 5K pace = MM + 33 seconds per mile
  • 10K pace = MM × 1.15
  • Half marathon pace = MM × 1.20
  • Marathon pace = MM × 1.30

To turn a per-mile pace into a finish time, multiply it by the race distance in miles: a 5K is 3.107 mi, a 10K is 6.214 mi, a half marathon is 13.109 mi, and a marathon is 26.219 mi.

Worked example

Suppose you run your magic mile in 8:00 (480 seconds).

  • 5K: pace = 8:00 + 0:33 = 8:33/mi → 513 s × 3.107 mi ≈ 26:34
  • 10K: pace = 480 × 1.15 = 552 s = 9:12/mi → × 6.214 mi ≈ 57:10
  • Half: pace = 480 × 1.20 = 576 s = 9:36/mi → × 13.109 mi ≈ 2:05:51
  • Marathon: pace = 480 × 1.30 = 624 s = 10:24/mi → × 26.219 mi ≈ 4:32:41

Why the pace slows for longer races

Notice that the predicted per-mile pace gets slower as the distance grows — the marathon multiplier (1.30) is larger than the 10K multiplier (1.15). That reflects a real physiological truth: no one holds their mile pace for 26 miles. Aerobic endurance, glycogen depletion, and fatigue force a slowdown, and Galloway's multipliers approximate how much slower a typical runner must go to finish each distance.

How to run a good Magic Mile

Warm up with 5–10 minutes of easy jogging. Find an accurately measured flat mile — a running track (four laps in the inside lane equals 1,600 m, about 0.994 mi) or a GPS-measured stretch. Run the mile at a strong, controlled effort you could just barely sustain; the first repeat you try will usually be a little conservative. Repeat the test every two to three weeks under similar conditions and use your best recent time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the Magic Mile prediction?
For most recreational runners the predictions are within a few percent, but they assume you have actually trained for the target distance. The marathon prediction in particular is only reliable if you have built up your long runs — a fast mile does not create marathon endurance on its own. Treat the numbers as goal-effort targets, not guarantees.
How often should I run a Magic Mile?
Galloway suggests roughly every two to three weeks. That is often enough to track fitness gains as your training progresses, but not so frequent that the hard effort interferes with recovery. Use your best time from the last few attempts rather than a single off day.
Do the multipliers change for run-walk runners?
No. Galloway designed the Magic Mile specifically around his run-walk-run method, and the multipliers already account for the walk breaks in your race. If you run your test mile using the same run-walk ratio you plan to race with, the predictions stay consistent.
How do heat and altitude affect the result?
The formula assumes cool, calm conditions on a flat course. Heat slows most runners by roughly 20–30 seconds per mile for each 10°F above about 60°F, and racing above ~5,000 ft of altitude typically costs 5–10% in pace due to lower oxygen. Run your test in conditions similar to race day, or adjust your expectations for the difference.
