About the Bicycle Lubricant Cost-to-Run Calculator
Chain lube is one of the cheapest things you buy for a bike, but it is easy to lose track of what a bottle actually costs you over a season. This calculator turns four numbers you can read off the bottle and your ride log — the bottle price, the bottle volume, how much lube you drip on per treatment, and how far you ride between re-lubes — into the cost per mile (or km), the cost per year, and how many rides one bottle lasts.
The formula
The math is straightforward unit arithmetic:
- Cost per application = bottle price × (dose per application ÷ bottle volume)
- Cost per mile/km = cost per application ÷ re-lube interval
- Cost per year = cost per mile/km × annual distance
- Applications per bottle = bottle volume ÷ dose per application
- Distance per bottle = applications per bottle × re-lube interval
Everything shares consistent units, so the price and volume can be in any currency and any volume unit as long as both bottle volume and dose use the same volume unit (the defaults use mL). The distance unit only labels the mileage figures.
Worked example
A 120 mL bottle at $12 costs $0.10 per mL. A clean drip-lube treatment uses about 0.8 mL, so one application costs $12 × (0.8 ÷ 120) = $0.08. If you re-lube every 100 miles, that is $0.0008 per mile — 0.08¢ per mile. Over 3,000 miles a year you spend 3,000 × $0.0008 = $2.40 on chain lube, and each 120 mL bottle covers 120 ÷ 0.8 = 150 applications, or 150 × 100 = 15,000 miles.
Typical reference points
- Dose per application: ~0.5–1.0 mL for drip lube (one small drop per roller on a ~114-link chain, then wiped down). Immersion/hot-wax treatments use several grams of wax per dip but stretch the interval.
- Re-lube interval: wet lube ~100–150 mi, dry lube ~60–120 mi, drip or hot wax ~100–200 mi. Rain, mud, and dusty gravel cut these figures sharply.
- Bottle size: common drip-lube bottles are 60 mL (2 fl oz), 120 mL (4 fl oz), and 240 mL (8 fl oz).
The headline takeaway: for almost any realistic inputs, chain lube costs a fraction of a cent per mile. The real money is in the drivetrain wear you avoid — a chain, cassette, and chainrings run well over $100 to replace, and a dry or gritty chain wears them out far faster.
