How the hiking time estimate works

This calculator uses Naismith's Rule, the classic mountaineering formula for estimating how long a walk on hilly terrain will take. It was devised in 1892 by the Scottish mountaineer William W. Naismith and remains the standard rule of thumb used in guidebooks, hillwalking courses, and mountain rescue planning.

The rule splits the estimate into two parts and adds them together:

  • Distance time: allow 1 hour for every 5 km of horizontal distance — a base walking pace of 5 km/h (about 3 mph). In this tool you can change the flat pace if you walk faster or slower.
  • Ascent time: add an extra 1 hour for every 600 m of total elevation gain. That works out to roughly 1 extra minute for every 10 m you climb, or about 30 minutes per 300 m of ascent.

The formula is simply:

Time (hours) = distance (km) ÷ pace (km/h) + ascent (m) ÷ 600

With the default 5 km/h pace, a 12 km walk with 600 m of climb comes out to 12 ÷ 5 = 2.4 hours for the distance plus 600 ÷ 600 = 1.0 hour for the ascent, giving 3.4 hours (3h 24m) of moving time.

Why elevation gain matters so much

Two trails of the same length can take very different amounts of time. A flat 10 km towpath at 5 km/h is a 2-hour walk. The same 10 km up a mountain with 1,000 m of ascent adds 1,000 ÷ 600 = 1.67 hours, making it a 3h 40m outing — nearly double. This is why hikers plan around total ascent, not just distance, and why the "ascent time" card in the results is often the deciding factor for a long day in the hills.

Metric and imperial equivalents

The traditional imperial statement of the rule is: allow 1 hour per 3 miles plus 1 hour per 2,000 feet of ascent. That is equivalent to the metric version here (5 km ≈ 3.1 miles; 600 m ≈ 1,969 ft). To convert your own figures: 1 mile = 1.609 km and 1 foot = 0.3048 m.

Naismith's original rule ignores descent, but a widely used refinement subtracts about 10 minutes per 300 m of descent on gentle slopes (5°–12°) and adds about 10 minutes per 300 m on steep descents (over 12°), where careful footing slows you down. On boggy, rocky, or snow-covered ground, reduce your flat pace input to 3–4 km/h.
