How the Dunk Calculator works
Dunking is a geometry problem before it is an athletic one. To dunk, the top of your reach at the peak of your jump has to clear the rim by enough margin to push the ball down through it. A regulation basketball rim sits exactly 10 feet — 120 inches — above the floor, and you generally need your hand roughly 6 inches above the rim to bring the ball over the edge cleanly. That gives a simple, exact formula:
Vertical jump needed to dunk = Rim height + Clearance − Standing reach
With the standard 120-inch rim and 6 inches of clearance, you need to reach 126 inches at the top of your jump. Subtract your standing reach and you have the vertical leap required. To simply touch the rim, drop the clearance term: vertical to touch rim = rim height − standing reach.
Standing reach, not height, is what matters
The single most important input is your standing reach — the distance from the floor to your fingertips when you stand flat-footed and stretch one arm straight overhead. Two people the same height can have standing reaches that differ by several inches because of arm length, shoulder width, and shoulder mobility. Standing reach is roughly 1.33 times your height, so a 6-foot (72-inch) person averages about 96 inches of reach, but always measure your own against a wall rather than estimating.
Common reference points
- Rim: 120 in (10 ft) for standard basketball; youth hoops are often set at 8 ft (96 in) or 9 ft (108 in).
- Clearance to dunk: about 6 in above the rim for a clean one-handed dunk; a light "rim-grazer" dunk can happen with as little as 3–4 in.
- Standing reach at 6 ft tall: ~96 in, meaning about a 30 in vertical is needed to dunk (126 − 96).
- Standing reach at 6 ft 6 in tall: ~104 in, meaning about a 22 in vertical is needed.
- Elite verticals: a 40 in vertical is exceptional; most trained athletes land in the 24–34 in range.
