What the Biking Life Gain Calculator estimates

This tool converts the time you spend cycling into an estimate of extra life expectancy. It is built on a well-known result from researchers at the University of Utrecht (working with the Dutch research organisation TNO): the health benefits of regular cycling add roughly the same amount of time to your life as you spend riding — a ratio of about one hour of life gained per one hour cycled. In the same body of work, regular cyclists were estimated to live around six months longer on average than non-cyclists.

The formula

The calculation is deliberately simple and transparent:

  • Total hours cycled = hours per week × 52 weeks × number of years.
  • Life gained = total hours cycled × the life-per-hour ratio (default 1.0).

For example, cycling 3 hours per week for 30 years is 3 × 52 × 30 = 4,680 hours in the saddle. At a 1:1 ratio that works out to about 4,680 hours of extra life — roughly 195 days, or about 6.4 months. The default ratio of 1.0 reflects the headline Utrecht estimate; you can lower it to be conservative or raise it if you also count vigorous riding, which some estimates value more highly.

Why cycling adds life

The gain is not magic — it comes from the same cardiovascular and metabolic effects behind all aerobic exercise: lower resting heart rate and blood pressure, better insulin sensitivity, healthier body composition, and reduced risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, several cancers, and depression. Cycling stands out in life-expectancy studies partly because it has a low injury rate compared with running, and because it is easy to build into a daily commute, so people tend to sustain it for decades. In the Utrecht analysis the life gained from activity outweighed the small risks from traffic and air-pollution exposure by a wide margin — on the order of 9 to 1 or better.
