What batting strike rate measures
In cricket, a batter's strike rate measures how quickly they score: the number of runs scored for every 100 balls faced. It is a rate of scoring speed, not of accuracy or reliability. A batter who scores 50 runs from 40 balls is scoring far faster than one who scores 50 from 90 balls, even though both reach the same total. Strike rate captures exactly that difference.
The formula
The calculation is a single ratio, scaled to 100 balls:
Strike Rate = (Runs Scored ÷ Balls Faced) × 100
Because it is multiplied by 100, a strike rate of exactly 100 means the batter scored, on average, one run per ball. A strike rate of 150 means 1.5 runs per ball; a strike rate of 50 means half a run per ball, or roughly one run every two deliveries. Worked example: 75 runs from 50 balls gives (75 ÷ 50) × 100 = 150.00. A century off 120 balls gives (100 ÷ 120) × 100 = 83.33.
Note that only balls faced count toward the denominator. Wides are not counted as balls faced by the batter, so they do not affect strike rate; byes and leg byes are balls faced but the runs are not credited to the batter, so they can lower it. Deliveries where the batter is out but scores nothing still count as a ball faced.
Why scoring speed matters
Total runs alone can hide how a batter helped or hurt the team. In limited-overs cricket every innings is capped by a fixed number of overs, so balls are a scarce resource. A batter who consumes many deliveries at a low strike rate leaves fewer balls for teammates and can put the team behind the required run rate. Strike rate makes that trade-off visible, which is why selectors, commentators, and fantasy-cricket players lean on it heavily in the shorter formats.
Typical strike rate benchmarks by format
- Twenty20 (T20): the fastest format. Established top-order batters aim for a strike rate around 130-150, and power hitters at the death routinely exceed 180-200 over short bursts.
- One Day Internationals (ODI): a strike rate near 85-100 is strong for a top-order batter across a 50-over innings, with finishers pushing well above that in the closing overs.
- Test cricket: scoring speed is secondary to occupying the crease and not losing your wicket. A strike rate of 45-60 is entirely normal and often ideal; aggressive Test batters sit around 70-90.
Strike rate versus batting average
Strike rate and batting average answer different questions. Batting average (runs divided by dismissals) measures how many runs a batter typically makes before getting out — a proxy for reliability. Strike rate measures how fast those runs come. A batter can have a high average and a low strike rate (a patient accumulator) or a modest average and a very high strike rate (an explosive hitter). The two are best read together: neither alone tells the full story.
