About the Ape Index

Your ape index compares your arm span (wingspan, measured fingertip to fingertip with arms stretched horizontally) to your standing height. It is a body-proportion metric popular in rock climbing, where extra reach lets you span between holds without moving your feet, and it also appears in swimming, boxing, and general anthropometry. There are two standard ways to express it.

The two formulas

  • Difference method: Ape index = Arm span − Height. A result of 0 means your reach equals your height. A positive number (arm span longer than height) is called a "positive ape index" or "positive wingspan"; a negative number means your height exceeds your reach.
  • Ratio method: Ape index = Arm span ÷ Height. A ratio of 1.0 is neutral; above 1.0 means longer reach, below 1.0 means shorter reach. For example, a 180 cm arm span with a 178 cm height gives a difference of +2 cm and a ratio of about 1.011.

Why reach matters

In climbing, a longer wingspan effectively lengthens every move: you can reach the next hold from a more stable, lower position and skip intermediate holds on sparse routes. Boxers with a reach advantage can land strikes while staying outside their opponent's range, and swimmers with long arms generate more propulsion per stroke. The advantage is real but modest — technique, finger strength, and body composition dominate outcomes far more than a couple of centimeters of reach.

  • For most people, arm span is very close to height, so the average difference is roughly 0 and the average ratio is about 1.0. Large population studies report mean arm-span-to-height ratios between about 1.00 and 1.03.
  • Many strong rock climbers sit around +2 to +6 in (about +5 to +15 cm), a ratio of roughly 1.01 to 1.04.
  • Notable outliers exist: some elite climbers and boxers have reported wingspans 6–8 in (15–20 cm) beyond their height, giving ratios near 1.05 or higher.

How to measure accurately

Measure arm span against a flat wall: stand with your back to it, spread both arms level with your shoulders, and mark from the tip of one middle finger to the tip of the other. Measure height without shoes, heels together, looking straight ahead. Because a positive ape index is often only a few centimeters, a measuring error of even 1–2 cm can flip the sign, so it helps to take each measurement two or three times and average them.
