How to use this calculator
Enter your values in the fields above and click Calculate to see your results instantly. All calculations run in your browser — no data is sent to a server and results appear immediately. Click Clear to reset all fields and start over.
Understanding your inputs
Each input field is labeled with the specific value it expects. Hover over the ? hint icons (where present) for additional guidance on what each field means and what units to use. For best results, double-check that all your input values use consistent units before calculating.
Interpreting the results
Results are shown immediately after clicking Calculate. The highlighted result card shows the primary output — the value most people need. Additional cards show supporting calculations that provide context and help you verify the primary result makes sense. If results seem unexpected, re-check your inputs for typos or unit mismatches.

What the podcast length calculator does and when to use it
This calculator builds a planned runtime for an episode from two choices: the format of your show and how many main segments you want. Each format has a built-in profile with an intro length, an outro length and a typical minutes-per-segment figure. The tool adds them up into a recommended total runtime and gives a pace range to aim for in each segment.
Use it when outlining an episode, deciding whether a guest interview needs three segments or four, or checking that a news roundup will stay inside a commute-friendly length. The profiles are planning defaults, not measured audience data, so treat them as a starting structure that you adjust after seeing how your own listeners behave in your podcast host's retention stats.
The method and its variables
- Intro and outro are fixed per format: interview 3 and 3 minutes, news 1.5 and 1.5, storytelling 2 and 2, educational 2 and 2, comedy 4 and 4.
- Per segment (p) is 10 minutes for interview, 4 for news, 9 for storytelling, 12 for educational and 15 for comedy.
- Segments (s) is the number you enter, rounded to a whole number and never below 1. If the field is blank or not positive, the calculator uses 3.
- Total runtime = intro + (p × s) + outro.
- Suggested pace per segment is p − 2 to p + 2 minutes, with a floor of 1 minute on the low end.
Runtimes of an hour or more are displayed as hours and minutes.
Worked example
Choose Interview with 4 segments. The intro is 3 minutes and the outro is 3 minutes. Main content is 4 × 10 = 40 minutes. The total is 3 + 40 + 3 = 46 minutes, and the suggested pace per segment is 8 to 12 minutes (10 − 2 and 10 + 2). The output lists Interview podcast, 4 segments, Intro 3 min, Main content 4 × 10 min = 40 min, Outro 3 min, Recommended total runtime 46 min and Suggested pace per segment 8–12 min.
For contrast, News with 5 segments is 1.5 + (5 × 4) + 1.5 = 23 minutes, with a pace of 2 to 6 minutes per segment, and Comedy with 3 segments is 4 + 45 + 4 = 53 minutes.
Common mistakes and how to interpret the result
- Reading the total as a rule. Nothing here says a particular length performs better. Audience attention depends on content quality, so use your own download and drop-off data to tune it.
- Forgetting ads and banter. Sponsor reads, cold opens and crosstalk take time. If they sit outside your segment plan, add them to the total.
- Entering decimals for segments. The value is rounded to the nearest whole number, so 3.5 becomes 4.
- Ignoring the pace range. If a segment regularly runs beyond the upper number, consider splitting it or trimming rather than letting the episode grow unnoticed.
