About the TikTok Time Alternatives Calculator
This calculator turns a habit that's easy to underestimate — a few minutes here and there on TikTok — into concrete totals: hours, full 24-hour days, an equivalent number of books, and a dollar figure based on the value you put on your own time. The math is simple multiplication and unit conversion; the point is making the running total visible.
The formula
Total minutes spent equals your daily minutes, multiplied by the fraction of the week you actually use the app (days per week ÷ 7), multiplied by the number of days in your chosen time period (a week, month, year, or longer):
- Total minutes = daily minutes × (days per week ÷ 7) × days in period
- Total hours = total minutes ÷ 60
- Full days = total hours ÷ 24 (back-to-back 24-hour days)
- Books = total hours ÷ hours per book, using the reading-speed assumption you set
- Dollar value = total hours × hourly value, the standard opportunity-cost formula for pricing a block of time
Why the "days per week" and "period" split matters
Nobody uses an app identically every single day, so the calculator separates two things: how many minutes on a typical day you use it, and how many days a week that pattern actually happens. Multiplying by (days per week ÷ 7) spreads that habit evenly across every day of the period, which keeps the arithmetic simple while still reflecting that some people only open the app on 4 or 5 days rather than all 7.
Reading the equivalents
The book and dollar figures are not facts about TikTok — they are your own stated assumptions applied to the same total-hours number. Change "hours to read one book" to match your actual pace, and change "value of your time" to your real hourly wage, a side-income rate, or simply $0 if you just want the raw hours and days.
