About the Pokémon Go Candy Calculator

In Pokémon GO, evolving a Pokémon costs a fixed amount of species-family Candy — for example, Charmander to Charmeleon costs 25 Candy. This calculator takes the Candy total your evolution needs, subtracts what you already have, and translates the remaining gap into three concrete actions: how many wild Pokémon you'd need to catch, how many you'd need to transfer, or how far you'd need to walk your Pokémon as a buddy.

The formula

The math is simple subtraction and division using Niantic's published Candy rates:

  • Candy gap = max(Candy needed − Candy owned, 0)
  • Catches needed = ceil(Candy gap ÷ Candy per catch), where a normal catch gives 3 Candy and a catch using a Pinap Berry gives 6
  • Transfers needed = Candy gap, since every transfer to Professor Willow awards exactly 1 Candy
  • Buddy distance needed = Candy gap × the Pokémon's buddy Candy distance (1, 3, 5, or 20 km per Candy, depending on rarity tier)

What it does not model

This calculator uses base game rates only. It does not account for catch-streak bonuses, Community Day or event Candy multipliers, Rare Candy conversion, Candy XL, or the first-catch-of-the-day bonus — all of which can change how much Candy a given catch or transfer actually yields. To approximate an event, raise the candy-per-catch input to match the announced multiplier.

How much candy do I earn per catch in Pokémon GO?
A normal catch awards 3 Candy for that Pokémon's family. A Pinap Berry doubles that to 6 Candy (it does not add catch XP, only candy). Catch streak bonuses and event multipliers can add more, but this calculator uses the base 3-or-6 rate.
How much candy does transferring a Pokémon give?
Transferring any Pokémon to Professor Willow always awards exactly 1 Candy for that species' family, regardless of the Pokémon's CP, level, or rarity.
How does buddy candy distance work?
Walking with a Pokémon set as your buddy earns 1 Candy every time you cover that Pokémon's buddy distance, which is 1, 3, 5, or 20 km depending on the species' candy rarity tier (common species usually need less distance than rare ones).
Does this calculator include Community Day or event candy bonuses?
No. Events like Community Day, Raid Hour, or special research can temporarily double or triple catch and transfer candy. To model an event, raise the candy-per-catch input to match the announced multiplier (for example 6 becomes 12 during a catch-candy-doubling event).
