Minutes Between Two Times Calculator

Enter a start time and an end time to get the exact minutes and hours between them, with an optional unpaid break deducted and automatic next-day wraparound for overnight spans.

Quick Facts

Formula
Net minutes = (End − Start, wrapped to 0–1440) − Break minutes
Times are compared as minutes since midnight; a next-day wrap adds 1440 minutes when the clock appears to run backward.

About the Minutes Between Two Times Calculator

This tool finds the exact duration between two clock times on the same day, or across midnight for overnight shifts, by converting both times to minutes since midnight and subtracting. It can also deduct an unpaid break, which makes it useful for timesheets, shift scheduling, and any task where you need a precise elapsed-time figure rather than a rough estimate.

The formula

  • Convert to minutes since midnight: for a time of H hours and M minutes, that is H × 60 + M. So 09:00 is 540 minutes and 17:30 is 1,050 minutes.
  • Subtract: gross elapsed minutes = end minutes − start minutes. In the example above, 1,050 − 540 = 510 minutes.
  • Handle overnight spans: if the subtraction is negative (or zero, when a full 24-hour span is intended) and the end time is meant to fall on the next day, add 1,440 — the number of minutes in a day. A shift from 22:00 to 06:00 becomes (360 − 1320) + 1440 = 480 minutes, i.e. 8 hours.
  • Subtract any break: net minutes = gross elapsed minutes − break minutes. This is the figure most timesheets actually want to record.

Formatting the result

  • Hours and minutes: divide net minutes by 60 to get whole hours, and the remainder is the leftover minutes (for example, 450 minutes is 7h 30m).
  • Decimal hours: divide net minutes by 60 directly and keep the fraction (450 minutes is 7.50 hours), which is the format most payroll and invoicing systems expect.

Common uses

  • Timesheets and payroll: turning clock-in and clock-out times into billable or payable hours
  • Shift scheduling, including overnight shifts that cross midnight
  • Meeting and appointment length, or gaps between two scheduled events
  • Cooking, workouts, commutes, or any activity where you know the start and end clock times but not the duration

Precision note

The calculator works in whole clock minutes and does not account for seconds, time zone changes, or daylight saving transitions. If a shift crosses a daylight saving change, the clock-time difference will be off by an hour from the true elapsed time; adjust manually in that case.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate minutes between two times?
Convert each clock time to minutes since midnight (hours × 60 plus minutes), then subtract the start value from the end value. If the result is negative and the end time falls on the next day, add 1,440 minutes (one full day) to get the correct elapsed time.
What happens if the end time is earlier than the start time?
That usually means the span crosses midnight, like a night shift from 22:00 to 06:00. Choosing "Assume end time is next day" adds 24 hours to the raw difference so the duration comes out positive. Choosing the same-day option instead flags the input as invalid, which helps catch typos when both times should be on the same calendar day.
How do I convert the result to decimal hours for payroll?
Divide the net minutes by 60. For example, 450 net minutes is 450 / 60 = 7.50 decimal hours, which is the format most timesheet and payroll systems expect instead of an hours-and-minutes display.
