The formula

Naismith's Rule states: allow 1 hour for every 3 miles (5 km) of distance traveled, plus 1 additional hour for every 2,000 feet (600 m) of elevation gained. In symbols, for a distance D in miles walked at pace P miles per hour with elevation gain E in feet:

Naismith's original rule assumed a fixed pace of 3 mph (5 km/h); this calculator generalizes that to let you set your own walking pace while keeping the standard ascent penalty of one hour per 2,000 feet of climbing. Naismith's Rule estimates continuous moving time only — it does not add time for rest breaks, which is why the "hours walked per day" input matters: it converts pure hiking hours into realistic calendar days that include food, sleep, and camp.
