About the Inches To Ring Size Converter
This tool converts a finger measurement taken in inches into a standard US ring size. Take the measurement either way you have available — wrap a non-stretchy strip of paper or string around the base of the finger and measure its length (circumference), or measure straight across the inside of a ring that already fits (diameter) — then let the calculator do the conversion.
The conversion formula
Ring sizing standards are built around finger circumference in millimeters. The calculator first converts your inches measurement to millimeters (value × 25.4). If you measured diameter instead of circumference, it multiplies by π first, since circumference = diameter × π. From there it applies the widely used linear approximation:
US ring size ≈ (circumference in mm − 36.5) ÷ 2.55
This relationship comes from how US ring sizes are spaced: each whole size step corresponds to about 2.55 mm more circumference, or about 0.81 mm more diameter. The result is rounded to the quarter, half, or whole size you choose, since most jewelers stock rings in half-size increments and some offer quarter sizes.
Why band width matters
A ring's inner circumference is only part of the fit story — a wider band contacts more of the finger's surface as it passes over the knuckle, so it feels tighter than a thin band cut to the same numeric size. Common jeweler guidance adds a size allowance based on band width: no change under about 4 mm, roughly +0.25 size from 4–6 mm, +0.5 size from 6–8 mm, +0.75 size from 8–10 mm, and +1 full size above 10 mm. The calculator applies this allowance automatically from the band width you enter.
