About the GPA Calculator Pakistan
This tool calculates your semester GPA and cumulative CGPA using the grading table most Pakistani universities follow under HEC (Higher Education Commission) guidelines. Enter each course's percentage marks and credit hours, plus your previous CGPA and previously completed credit hours, and the calculator converts marks to grade points, weights them by credit hours, and reports both your current semester GPA and your updated cumulative CGPA.
The grading scale
Percentage marks convert to a letter grade and a grade point on a 4.00-point scale:
- 85-100% = A = 4.00
- 80-84% = A- = 3.66
- 75-79% = B+ = 3.33
- 71-74% = B = 3.00
- 68-70% = B- = 2.66
- 64-67% = C+ = 2.33
- 61-63% = C = 2.00
- 58-60% = C- = 1.66
- 54-57% = D+ = 1.33
- 50-53% = D = 1.00
- Below 50% = F = 0.00
This absolute grading table is widely used across HEC-affiliated Pakistani universities, but individual institutions can set their own boundaries, so check your own university's official transcript key if you need an exact match.
The formula
Each course earns quality points equal to its grade point multiplied by its credit hours. Semester GPA is the sum of quality points divided by the sum of credit hours:
GPA = Σ(Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ(Credit Hours)
Cumulative CGPA applies the same weighted-average idea across every semester you have completed, not just the current one. If you already have a CGPA and a total credit-hour count from prior semesters, the new CGPA is:
CGPA = (Previous CGPA × Previous Credit Hours + This Semester's Quality Points) ÷ (Previous Credit Hours + This Semester's Credit Hours)
Worked example
Suppose you scored 85% in a 3-credit course (grade point 4.00, quality points 12.00) and 75% in another 3-credit course (grade point 3.33, quality points 9.99). Semester quality points total 21.99 over 6 credit hours, giving a semester GPA of 3.665, rounded to 3.67. If your previous CGPA was 3.20 over 60 credit hours (192.00 quality points), your new cumulative total is (192.00 + 21.99) ÷ (60 + 6) = 213.99 ÷ 66 ≈ 3.24.
How to get the best results
- Enter percentage marks, not raw scores out of a different total — convert first if your transcript shows raw marks.
- Use the credit hours listed on your course outline or transcript, not the number of classes per week.
- If a semester has more than two courses, calculate quality points for each one by hand (grade point × credit hours), add them together, and divide by total credit hours — the calculator's two-course fields illustrate the exact same method you extend to any number of courses.
Practical context
A GPA calculator gives you the arithmetic, but grading policies (rounding rules, minimum passing marks, probation thresholds) differ between universities and even between programs at the same university. Treat this tool as a planning aid and confirm your official GPA against your university's transcript or student portal.
