About the EU to US Shoe Size Calculator
This calculator converts a European (EU) shoe size into its approximate United States (US) equivalent for men's or women's footwear, and estimates the foot length behind that size. EU sizes come from the French "Paris point" stick system, where each whole size represents about 2/3 cm (6.67 mm) of the shoe's internal (last) length. US sizes use a different base — the Brannock scale — where each full size step is about 1/3 inch (8.5 mm). Because the two systems start from different units and every brand rounds slightly differently, an EU-to-US conversion is always a close estimate rather than an exact match.
The formula
This tool uses the standard offset relationships found on most shoe size charts:
- Men's US size ≈ EU size − 33
- Women's US size ≈ EU size − 31
The two-size gap between the men's and women's offsets reflects that, for the same physical foot length, women's US shoe sizing runs about two sizes higher in its number than men's US sizing. Results are rounded to the nearest half size, since that is the finest increment most shoes are sold in.
Estimating foot length and UK size
Because EU sizes are tied directly to length, this calculator also reverses the Paris-point relationship (EU size ≈ foot length in cm × 1.5) to estimate foot length: foot length (cm) ≈ EU size ÷ 1.5, converted to inches by dividing by 2.54. UK size is estimated from the converted US size using the commonly published offsets of US − 1 for men's and US − 2 for women's — again a close approximation, since UK and US sizes both step by about 1/3 inch but start counting from different base points.
Why sizes vary between brands
Even at the same foot length, one brand's "US 9" can fit differently than another's, because shoe lasts (the foot-shaped forms shoes are built on) differ in shape, width, and how much extra room is built in. Treat this calculator's output as a reliable starting point — typically within half a size of a brand's own chart — and check a specific brand's size guide or try shoes on when the fit really matters.
