Elapsed Time Calculator

Enter a start date and time and an end date and time to get the exact elapsed duration — in days, hours, and minutes, plus decimal totals for timesheets and billing.

Quick Facts

Method
Elapsed time = End date/time − Start date/time
1 day = 24 hours = 1,440 minutes = 86,400 seconds; the total is broken into whole days, hours, and minutes.

About the Elapsed Time Calculator

This calculator finds the exact duration between two points in time. Give it a start date and time and an end date and time, and it works out the difference by subtracting the start moment from the end moment — then reports the result as a day/hour/minute breakdown plus decimal totals in days, hours, and minutes.

The formula

Elapsed time is basic subtraction of two timestamps:

  • Elapsed time = End date/time − Start date/time
  • The difference (in seconds) is converted into whole days, hours, minutes, and seconds using standard conversions: 1 day = 24 hours = 1,440 minutes = 86,400 seconds.
  • Decimal totals (such as 56.50 hours) are useful for timesheets and billing, where a single fractional number is easier to work with than a mixed unit breakdown.

How the breakdown works

The calculator converts the total elapsed seconds into the largest whole number of days, then the largest whole number of hours from what remains, then minutes, then any leftover seconds — the same long-division approach a stopwatch or payroll clock uses. Because it works from raw seconds, it automatically handles durations that cross midnight or span multiple calendar days.

Common uses

  • Timing work shifts or billable hours between a clock-in and clock-out time
  • Measuring the duration of an event, meeting, flight, or trip
  • Finding time-since or time-until a moment in days, hours, and minutes rather than just calendar years
  • Working out cooking, workout, or countdown durations between an exact start and end moment

Precision note

This calculator treats each calendar day as 24 hours, based on the local date and time values you enter. It does not apply time-zone conversion, so both the start and end values are assumed to be in the same time zone. If your start and end moments fall on either side of a daylight-saving clock change, the elapsed hours reflect the clock-time difference rather than true physical elapsed time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is elapsed time calculated?
Elapsed time is the end date and time minus the start date and time. The result in total seconds is converted into days, hours, minutes, and seconds using the standard conversions: 1 day = 24 hours, 1 hour = 60 minutes, 1 minute = 60 seconds.
What happens if the elapsed time spans multiple days?
The calculator works from the total number of seconds between the two moments, so it automatically counts whole days first and then breaks the remainder into hours and minutes. A duration of 56.5 hours, for example, is reported as 2 days, 8 hours, and 30 minutes.
Why do I also get totals in decimal hours and minutes?
The day/hour/minute breakdown is easiest to read, but decimal totals such as 56.50 hours are more useful for timesheets, billing, or spreadsheet formulas, where a single number is easier to work with than a mixed-unit breakdown.
Can the end time be earlier than the start time?
No, the end date and time must be after the start date and time. To measure a duration that crosses midnight, keep the start time on the earlier calendar date and set the end date to the following day rather than leaving both dates the same.
