About the Chronological Age Calculator
Chronological age is the amount of time that has passed since a person's date of birth, measured as of a specific reference date — usually today, but it can be any date you choose, such as a test date, an eligibility deadline, or an anniversary. It differs from a bare year subtraction because it is broken into completed years, months, and days using real calendar lengths, not a fixed 30-day month or a 365-day year.
How the calculation works
The calculator subtracts the birth date from the reference date component by component, using the standard method behind most age tools:
- Start with the difference between the two dates' years, months, and days.
- If the reference date's day-of-month is smaller than the birth date's day-of-month, borrow one month and add the number of days in the calendar month immediately before the reference month.
- If that (possibly adjusted) month difference is negative, borrow one year and add 12 to the month count.
- The result is a whole number of completed years, a whole number of completed months (0–11), and a whole number of completed days — the convention used in pediatrics, developmental testing, and everyday age reporting.

- Age in months — total completed months lived (years × 12 plus the remainder), useful for infant and early-childhood milestones that are tracked in months rather than years.
- Age in days — the exact number of calendar days between the two dates, useful for precise eligibility windows or day-count rules.
- Next birthday — the number of days from the reference date until the next anniversary of the birth date.
A note on leap-year birthdays
If the date of birth is February 29, the calculator follows standard calendar-object behavior: in a non-leap reference year, "February 29" rolls forward to March 1, so the birthday is effectively treated as March 1 in non-leap years. Some legal or administrative contexts instead recognize February 28 — check the applicable rule if the exact day matters for your situation.
