Genealogists, historians, and family researchers often know a person's date of death and their age at death — read from a tombstone, obituary, or death certificate — but not their exact date of birth. This calculator reverses the standard "age at a given date" formula: instead of computing age from two known dates, it works backward from a death date and a recorded age to estimate the date of birth.

The formula

Age at death is traditionally recorded as a triplet of years, months, and days (for example, "82 years, 3 months, 11 days"). To recover the birth date, the calculator subtracts each component from the date of death, in the same order used when the age was originally calculated forward:

  • Subtract years from the death date's year.
  • Subtract months from the date that results.
  • Subtract days from what remains, arriving at the estimated date of birth.

This order — years, then months, then days — mirrors the convention used to calculate age forward (birth date + years + months + days = death date), so reversing it in the same sequence recovers the original birth date, provided the recorded age used that same convention.

Why the order of subtraction matters

Calendar months have different lengths, so subtracting components in a different order can land on a different calendar date near month boundaries. Subtracting years first, then months, then days — letting each step's rollover carry into the next — is the order genealogical age calculations use, and it is the order this tool applies.

When the age is only known in whole years

If a record states only a whole number of years with no months or days, leave those fields at 0. The result then represents the latest possible birth date consistent with that age — the date the person would have just turned that age. Because the exact birthday within the year is unknown, the true birth date could fall anywhere up to 364 days earlier.

A worked example

Someone died on June 15, 2020 at an age of 82 years, 3 months, 11 days. Subtracting 82 years from June 15, 2020 gives June 15, 1938; subtracting 3 months gives March 15, 1938; subtracting 11 days gives March 4, 1938. Their estimated date of birth is March 4, 1938 — a Friday.
