Understanding the Beauty Products Calculator

This tool applies simple unit-cost math — the same math used to calculate "price per ounce" on a store shelf label — to any beauty or skincare product: cleansers, serums, foundation, shampoo, sunscreen, or fragrance. Give it what you paid, how much is in the container, and how much you use each time, and it works out what every application actually costs you and how long the product will last.

The formulas

Four values come from three inputs — price, container size, and amount used per application — plus how often you use the product:

  • Uses per container: container size ÷ amount used per application. A 1.7 oz bottle used 0.05 oz at a time gives 1.7 ÷ 0.05 = 34 uses.
  • Cost per use: price ÷ uses per container. A $24.99 bottle with 34 uses costs 24.99 ÷ 34 ≈ $0.74 per use.
  • Days of supply: uses per container ÷ (uses per week ÷ 7). Used once a day (7 uses/week), 34 uses last about 34 days; used twice a day (14 uses/week), the same container lasts about 17 days.
  • Cost per month: cost per use × (uses per week ÷ 7) × 30 — a 30-day average of what the product costs you.

Why cost per use beats sticker price

A $60 serum that lasts six months can cost less per use than a $15 serum you burn through in three weeks. Sticker price only tells you what you pay at checkout; cost per use tells you what you actually pay to use the product, which is the number that's comparable across brands, sizes, and formulas.

Getting good inputs

Container size and price are usually printed on the label or receipt. Amount used per application is the input you'll need to estimate — check a pump dispenser's typical output (often about 0.03–0.05 oz per pump) or weigh a few applications on a kitchen scale for a more precise figure. The more accurate that number is, the more accurate every other result will be, since it drives the whole calculation.

How is cost per use calculated?
Cost per use equals the product's price divided by the total number of applications you'll get from it. Total applications equal the container size divided by the amount you use each time, for example a 1.7 oz bottle used 0.05 oz at a time yields 34 uses, so a $24.99 bottle costs about $0.74 per use.
How is days of supply calculated?
Days of supply equals total uses divided by your average uses per day, where uses per day is your weekly usage divided by 7. A container with 34 uses, applied once a day, lasts about 34 days; applied twice a day, it lasts about 17 days.
Why does the amount used per application matter so much?
Because total uses is the size divided by that amount, small changes in how much product you apply each time have an outsized effect. Using half as much per application roughly doubles both the number of uses and how long the product lasts, and roughly halves the cost per use.
Does this calculator account for product waste or unusable residue?
No. The formula assumes every gram or ounce in the container is usable. In practice a small amount is left in the packaging (often 5-10% for tubes and pumps), so real-world cost per use and days of supply are usually a bit higher than the calculated figures.
