About the Balloon Arch Calculator
This calculator estimates how many balloons you need to build a balloon arch or garland, based on the arch length and the balloon-cluster method most balloon decorators use. Enter the finished length of the arch, the balloon size, and how many balloons go in each cluster, and it returns the total balloon count, the number of clusters, and how many balloons of each color you'll need.
The formula
Balloon arches are almost always built from small twisted groups called clusters — typically 3 to 5 balloons (most commonly 4) twisted together and attached along a frame, mesh netting, or fishing line. A widely used rule of thumb among balloon decorators is that a full, dense arch built from standard 11-inch balloons uses about 16 balloons per linear foot of arch. Because smaller balloons take up less space, they need proportionally more per foot, while larger balloons need fewer. This calculator scales that reference rate by balloon diameter:
- Balloons per foot = 16 × (11 ÷ balloon size in inches)
- Total balloons = balloons per foot × arch length in feet
- Clusters required = total balloons ÷ balloons per cluster
- Balloons per color = total balloons ÷ number of colors
How to measure arch length
Arch length is the finished distance the balloons will cover, measured along the curve — from one base point, up and over the arch, down to the other base point — not the straight-line width between the two legs. If you're working from a frame, measure along the frame itself; if you're planning freehand, add the two vertical leg heights to the width of the curved top for a reasonable estimate.
Reading your results
The total balloon count is a shopping-list estimate: buy a small surplus (5-10%) to cover pops and duds. Balloons per foot tells you how dense the arch will look — higher density (smaller balloons) reads as fuller and more "organic," while lower density (larger balloons) reads as bolder and more graphic. Since arch balloons are supported by a frame or line rather than needing to float, they are normally air-filled with a hand or electric pump, not helium.
