This calculator turns two simple inputs — an audiobook's length and your playback speed — into a listening-time estimate, then projects that pace across a week and a year. The core idea: playback speed divides listening time, and the free minutes during a commute, workout, or chore add up to real reading throughput over a year.

The formulas used

  • Listening time at speed: audiobook length (minutes) ÷ playback speed. A 10-hour (600-minute) book at 1.5x takes 400 minutes, or 6 hours 40 minutes.
  • Days to finish: listening time ÷ your daily listening minutes, converted to calendar days using how many days a week you actually listen.
  • Books per year: total annual listening minutes (daily minutes × listening days per week × 52 weeks) divided by the speed-adjusted length of a typical book.
  • Hours reclaimed: the difference between listening at 1.0x and at your chosen speed, multiplied by the number of books you'd finish in a year.

How to get the best results

  • Use the audiobook's actual runtime at normal (1.0x) speed — check the app or store listing, not the print page count.
  • Count only genuine "dead time" minutes (commute, chores, exercise) as daily listening time, not time you'd otherwise spend reading or doing something else.
