Formula and method for trapezoid perimeter

A trapezoid (also called a trapezium) is a four-sided polygon with exactly one pair of parallel sides, called the bases (a and b), and two non-parallel sides called the legs (c and d). Because perimeter simply measures the distance around a shape, you never need the height, the angles, or the area to find it — you only need the four side lengths, added together.
How the calculation works
This calculator takes the four side lengths you enter and sums them directly: P = a + b + c + d. It also reports the sum of the two bases (a + b) and the sum of the two legs (c + d) as intermediate values, and flags whether the trapezoid is isosceles (equal legs, c = d) or scalene (unequal legs). Before adding, the calculator checks a basic geometric requirement: the two legs must be long enough to bridge the gap between the bases, or c + d > |a − b|. If that fails, no flat trapezoid can have those four side lengths, and the calculator flags the inputs instead of returning a meaningless sum. Enter all four measurements in the same unit — mixing feet and inches, or centimeters and meters, produces an incorrect total.
Common mistakes
- Confusing perimeter with area: area needs the height too —
Area = (a + b) / 2 × h— and comes out in square units. Perimeter is a straight sum of four lengths and stays in linear units. - Mixing units: a base measured in feet and a leg measured in inches must be converted to the same unit before entering them, or the total is meaningless.
- Measuring the diagonal instead of the leg: the legs are the two sides of the trapezoid itself, not the diagonals that cross the interior.
- Assuming any four lengths work: the legs must satisfy c + d > |a − b| for the shape to close up as a flat trapezoid.
